MADISON – To help commemorate Correctional Employees Week in Wisconsin, Department of Corrections (DOC) Secretary Rick Raemisch today formally recognized the winners of the 2008 Secretary’s SALUTE Award program, which pays tribute to the tremendous work of DOC employees. “Governor Doyle has proclaimed the week Correctional Employees Week and May 7 as State Employee Recognition Day, and I am honored to join with him in recognizing the talents, dedication and professionalism of our Department’s staff,” Secretary Raemisch said. “Although the Secretary’s SALUTE Awards program recognizes exemplary performance in six main areas, our workforce demonstrates many additional honorable qualities and abilities that, collectively, makes the Wisconsin Department of Corrections the finest agency of its kind in the nation.” The Secretary’s SALUTE Awards program was started in 2007 by former DOC Secretary Matt Frank. As part of the program, employees nominate their peers for a SALUTE Award recognizing service, awareness, leadership, uniqueness, teamwork or excellence. From these nominations, a review committee then makes final selections, which are forwarded to the Secretary. The 2008 Secretary’s SALUTE Award winners are: SERVICE: John Shanda, IS Technical Services Consultant based in Central Office. AWARENESS: Ann Schoen, Social Worker at Oshkosh Correctional Institution. LEADERSHIP: Bernard A. (Bernie) Knox, Youth Counselor-Advanced at Lincoln Hills School. UNIQUENESS: Nancy Elliott, Psychologist Supervisor at Fox Lake Correctional Institution. TEAM: Members of the Standardized Pre-release Program Committee, comprised of Kim Koeck, Education Director at Redgranite Correctional Institution; Karen Simon, Social Worker at Kettle Moraine Correctional Institution; Dave Picard, Education Director at Kettle Moraine Correctional Institution; Lonny Calhoun, Probation and Parole Agent out of Rhinelander; and Pat Millichap, Field Supervisor out of Waukesha. EXCELLENCE: Randy Gasser, Probation and Parole Agent based in Madison. “I salute all of this year’s winners as well as all Department of Corrections employees, who dedicate themselves toward fulfilling our Department’s mission of public safety throughout the year,” Secretary Raemisch said.
