PROGRAM TRAINING UPDATES

Juvenile Cognitive Intervention Program

In May 2003, the Department of Corrections had a significant reduction in staff positions at Central Office in Madison. One of the positions eliminated was the Training Coordinator that DJC used to facilitate and plan for the Juvenile Cognitive Intervention Program and other county-specific training.

DJC's Executive Management Team recently made the difficult decision to train only current DJC employees on JCIP. There are several residential care centers and a few counties that were trained a few years ago in an introduction to JCIP.  There have been updates and revisions to the curriculum particularly in Phase 1, Choices.  Counties and service providers may want to have training sessions on revisions and refreshers of the JCIP curriculum, but at this time, there is no Division staff to coordinate such sessions.

The Division of Juvenile Corrections is encouraging counties, treatment providers and placement providers to work directly with Dr. David Smith, JCIP Instructor, to coordinate training for their staff. Dr. Smith has already been contacted by county supervisors to give a half-day overview of the basics of JCIP that may lead to entire units of staff being trained in it. Agencies that are interested in working with Dr. Smith to provide introduction, refresher or update training are responsible for entering into a contract directly with him and providing their own funds to support the training.

Dr. Smith may be contacted via email at ThotDr@wi.rr.com.

Juvenile Sex Offender Management Training Sessions

Training for county staff will be completed by mid-November with the last session in Brookfield to be held November 15 and 16 at the Comfort Inn & Suites, 1250 S. Moorland Road, Brookfield  (262) 782-1400.  The curriculum is designed to benefit front-line county workers who supervise and case-manage juveniles who have been referred to juvenile court for a sexual offense.

County Directors Meetings on Juvenile Sex Offender Management

DJC staff are in the process of meeting with county directors and managers regarding the Sex Offender Management Training sessions that their staff have been attending.  The meetings are designed to review training curriculum content and to identify policy and practice issues that arise from discussions during the six statewide sessions.
