Governor Doyle Honors State’s Correctional Employees

Proclaims May 7-13 Correctional Employees Week, Paying Tribute to DOC Staff

(MADISON) – Governor Jim Doyle has proclaimed May 7-13, 2006, as Correctional Employees Week to recognize the contributions of those who work in facilities across the Wisconsin Department of Corrections (DOC).

The proclamation honors DOC workers for their “selfless commitment to ensuring public safety by the diligent supervision of sentenced offenders and adjudicated juveniles, both in institutions and in the community,” and it notes that the quality of life in Wisconsin is improved through their commitment toward “restoring a portion of this state’s citizenry to a more positive position in society by providing sentenced offenders fair and impartial custody, treatment, nutrition, education, and health care.”

DOC Secretary Matt Frank said, “Governor Doyle’s proclamation recognizes our talented employees who have helped build the Department of Corrections’ reputation for excellence. Corrections work can be demanding and stressful, frustrating and rewarding, and always challenging. Our employees demonstrate commitment, dedication, vigilance, professionalism and hard work every day of the year.”

The proclamation also states that recognizing correctional employees is vital, and that “a positive public perception of the role of correctional employees is important in the continued exemplary performance of their duties.”

To commemorate the week, DOC has planned a variety of activities and events in institutions and department offices across the state.

“We are fortunate to have the high quality workforce that we have at the Department of Corrections,” Secretary Frank said. “The work of our employees help make our kids and communities safe, and helps make Wisconsin a great place to live and work. Whether based in an institution or in the field, their work touches the lives of thousands of people in every community and every corner of this state.”

Approximately 10,000 employees work for the Department, which includes the divisions of Adult Institutions, Juvenile Corrections, Community Corrections and Management Services.

“It is a privilege to join with Governor Doyle in recognizing our correctional employees,” Secretary Frank said. “We salute them and thank them for a job well done.”
