Secretary Raemisch Appoints New Superintendent of
Thompson Correctional Center

Troy Hermans to oversee Deerfield correctional facility

MADISON – Department of Corrections (DOC) Secretary Rick Raemisch today announced that he has appointed Troy Hermans as Superintendent of the Thompson Correctional Center (TCC) in Deerfield.

“Troy Hermans brings a diverse range of talents and strong leadership to his new position, and I am confident that his abilities will be an asset to the Thompson Correctional Center,” Secretary Raemisch said. “Over the past decade, he has advanced quickly within the Department, and has also demonstrated a commitment to serving our country through his deployments to the Middle East with the 440th  Airlift Wing, United States Air Force Reserve.”

“As Superintendent of TCC, he will play an important role in advancing the center’s mission of holding offenders accountable, while preparing them for a successful reentry to the community,” Secretary Raemisch added.

Hermans began his career with the Department of Corrections in 1995 at Dodge Correctional Institution as a Correctional Officer, later transferring to Oshkosh Correctional Institution. In 1999, he promoted to Sergeant at the Drug Abuse Correctional Center. In 2001, he promoted to Supervising Officer 1 at Redgranite Correctional Institution. In 2003 he returned to the Center System as a Supervising Officer 2 at the Robert E. Ellsworth Correctional Center. For the past four years, Hermans has served as a Corrections Unit Supervisor with the Milwaukee Secure Detention Facility, overseeing the 36 bed Felony Drug Offender Alternative to Prison (FDOATP) treatment program as well as a 200 bed general population unit of probation and parole holds. He is also a 2006 graduate of the Department’s Leadership Development Program.

Prior to joining the Department, Hermans served as an Aircraft Director with the United States Navy from 1990 to 1993, and enlisted in the United States Air Force Reserves, serving from 2000 to 2006 as an Aircraft Electrical & Environmental System Specialist. Troy promoted to the rank of Staff Sergeant in 2005 during his deployment to the Middle East in support of Operations Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom. He continues his service with the Wisconsin Air National Guard.

Hermans replaces former TCC Superintendent Jane Dier-Zimmel, who moved earlier this year to the Southern Oaks Girls School as Superintendent. TCC is one of 13 facilities operated under the Wisconsin Correctional Center System within the Division of Adult Institutions, housing male offenders in their last months of incarceration before they complete their prison sentence and are released to the community. Hermans’ appointment takes effect Sept. 30, 2007.
