Selection Criteria for Direct Commitments to SPRITE

1.     All referrals to SPRITE are considered and screened. The referring agency needs to justify participation based on the goals stated in the program description.  No youth is categorically denied due to the selection criteria outlined below.

2.     SPRITE is a diversion program for county youth.  The referring county should have a plan that calls for strong consequences should a youth fail the SPRITE program.  The consequences must be viewed by the youth as more extensive than the SPRITE program itself. (i.e., a correctional stay at EAS, LHS, placement at an RTC or some other out-of-home placement).  SPRITE is a difficult and challenging program; most of the youth who attend SPRITE have demonstrated a lack of motivation throughout their life. Having a plan of strong consequences in place helps motivate the youth to complete SPRITE and strengthen their understanding that the county takes the program placement seriously.

3.     If a youth is successful in completing SPRITE, it is requested that the youth not be placed in secure custody immediately following release from SPRITE. This is very important.  Youth usually feel very good about themselves when they complete the program.  In order to maximize the benefits of their success and new self-concept, an immediate reward is essential.  Preference will be given to youth who have a solid aftercare plan in place that will help support the gains and objectives taught at SPRITE.

4.     Youth who are mentally unstable or have serious mental health issues are not normally selected.

5.     Youth with serious AODA problems who have not had treatment may not be accepted.

6.     Youth must take ownership of their past offenses and express a willingness to change.

7.     Youth must verbalize a willingness to participate in the program and be committed to the rules of the program.
