DOC Secretary Frank Recognizes Winners
of New SALUTE Award Program

Congratulatory ceremony at state Capitol helps commemorate 2007 Correctional Employees Week

MADISON – Department of Corrections (DOC) Secretary Matt Frank today formally recognized the first winners of the Secretary’s SALUTE Award program, a new initiative designed to publicly recognize and honor the tremendous work of DOC employees.

“Through proclamations he has issued for Correctional Employees Week and State Employee Recognition Day, Governor Doyle has highlighted the dedication and commitment of every employee of the Department of Corrections.” Secretary Frank said. “It is a privilege to join with him in publicly recognizing and thanking our staff for the work they do throughout the year. Our employees make a significant contribution to public safety and to the quality of life we have in Wisconsin.”

Under a new program started by Secretary Frank this year, employees are encouraged to nominate their peers for a SALUTE award recognizing service, awareness, leadership, uniqueness, teamwork or excellence. From these nominations, a review committee then makes final selections which are forwarded to the Secretary.

The 2007 Secretary’s SALUTE Award winners are:

SERVICE: Linda Kroll, Probation and Parole Agent, Unit 704/Fond du Lac: Kroll has provided a great community service by developing and sharing her unique suicide grieving program - Adam’s Story - in honor of her late son Adam, who took his life. She also has been a guardian for two developmentally disabled individuals in Fond du Lac County. She has volunteered for numerous organizations, such as Up With People and Morning Kiwanis, and she and her husband host families from parts of the United States, Panama and Russia.

AWARENESS: Joni Groll, Probation and Parole Agent, Unit 616/Peshtigo: Groll coordinates the program “Every 15 Minutes” to educate high school students in Oconto County about the dangers of drinking and driving. The two-day program includes a staged drunk driving accident outside of the school, with a full police, fire and EMS response to student participants. Groll also participates annually in National Night Out, which is designed to heighten crime and drug prevention awareness.

LEADERSHIP: Robert Regalia, Correctional Officer, Milwaukee Secure Detention Facility: Regalia has shown strong leadership throughout his career, and recently took the lead in recruiting a group of Polar Plungers, dubbed the “Prison Plungers,” to raise funds to benefit Special Olympics Wisconsin. On his own time, Regalia worked to raise more than $1,600 in funds and dedicated the “Prison Plungers Polar Plunge 2007” to a Special Olympics Wisconsin athlete who also is the son of a co-worker.

UNIQUENESS: Robert Deaver, Fleet Manager, Division of Management Services: Deaver’s ingenuity has led to a successful reduction of the Department of Correction vehicle fleet. In the summer of 2004, Governor Doyle called for a reduction of the State Vehicle Fleet to lower costs and increase efficiency within state agencies. In September that year, Deaver joined the DOC and reduced fleet numbers, and today he manages a fleet of less than 900. His project management and computer knowledge, plus his dedication, have brought the Department cost savings, increased productivity, performance and efficiency.

TEAM: Division of Juvenile Corrections Southeastern Regional Office Black History Month Committee: For the past nine years, the Southeastern Regional Office has celebrated Black History Month. The events have featured lectures by prominent African Americans, African music, dance, poetry, drumming, and ethnic feasts. The events provide a strong historical understanding of African culture and its connections to present everyday life. With almost perfect attendance by DJC clients, staff and families, the event is an emotional and cultural experience presented in the spirit of family, tradition, friendship and hope.

EXCELLENCE: Kurt Hein, Correctional Sergeant, Fox Lake Correctional Institution: Hein has received several letters of commendation throughout his career for excellence under pressure in a variety of situations. Hein also demonstrates daily excellence in his role of Sergeant at a FLCI housing unit that specializes in medically complex cases, to create a culture to address the complex medical and emotional needs of the inmate population on this unit.

“We are proud to highlight the work of this year’s SALUTE award winners as well as all of the Department’s employees who dedicate themselves every day to the safety of Wisconsin’s citizens,” Secretary Frank said.
