Waupun Correctional Institution
Hostage Incident Ends

WAUPUN – A hostage incident that prompted an emergency lockdown this morning at the Waupun Correctional Institution (WCI) ended without incident at 12:06 p.m., when the inmate surrendered to authorities and the state employee exited the area without physical injury.

The incident began at approximately 6:30 a.m. when WCI security supervisors were notified that the inmate took a non-uniformed dental technician hostage in a room of the institution’s Health and Segregation Complex.

Following his surrender, the inmate was immediately taken into custody by security staff and remains at WCI at this time. WCI will remain in a precautionary lockdown status until further notice.

DOC Secretary Rick Raemisch issued the following statement:

“I am proud of the professionalism and skill of our staff in bringing this incident to a safe conclusion.  In addition, we are grateful for the support of the Dodge County Sheriff's Department and other law enforcement partners, which made their staff, technical resources and expertise available to us.

“The occurrence of an incident like this, which placed one of our staff at risk, is matter of great concern.  I have ordered an immediate after-incident investigation to examine how this incident occurred and to develop recommendations to prevent such an incident from recurring in the future.”
