Computer Recycling Program

Discarded computer equipment is the nation's fastest growing category of solid waste. The National Safety Council estimates that 500 million personal computers will be obsolete by 2007. If recycling or re-use programs are not implemented, the majority of these obsolete machines will end up in our nation’s landfills.

The Department of Corrections’ Computer Recycling Program, originated in 1997, is a mutually beneficial program designed to address a portion of the problem. Currently, the program operates at three institutions, Taycheedah, Racine Youthful Offender Correctional Facility, and the Jackson Correctional Institution.

Inmates in the program salvage, repair, and upgrade computers for donation or sale at a nominal cost to preschools, daycares, W2 training programs, and the elderly, disabled or underprivileged. They clean, reformat, and match components for recycling and remanufacturing. Inmates also test electronic equipment for operating condition and demanufacture any unsalvageable equipment for parts recycling or proper disposal.

At the Racine Youthful Offender Correctional Facility, all donated equipment is received, stored, sorted, and tested. Equipment not suited for further use is demanufactured. Restorable equipment is sent to Taycheedah Correctional where female inmates clean, repair and upgrade it. During the past year, an additional operation was opened at the Jackson Correctional Institution in Black River Falls and at the Redgranite Correctional Center.

The Department of Corrections has drop-off sites throughout the state for

computer donations. Computer recycling collection containers are available at

the following locations for donations of 5 pieces or less during operating

hours. For donations of more than 5 pieces, please call the Bureau of

Correctional Enterprises at 1-800-862-1086 for our FREE pickup service.

Note: Whether equipment is dropped off or picked up, there is a $10 fee for each donated monitor.
