INSTITUTION INFORMATION The State of Wisconsin purchased this facility in 1995 to be used as a Juvenile Correctional Institution for non-assaultive male youthful offenders. The main grounds and the majority of the buildings were originally constructed in the mid 1900s. The facility originally served as a Jesuit High School and later as a Lutheran Preparatory High School. Due to the decreases of juvenile offender population in the Division of Juvenile Corrections, the Legislature in the 1997 Senate Bill 113, authorized the Department of Corrections to temporally utilize this facility for the Division of Adult Institutions. The Division of Juvenile Corrections contracted 302 beds at the Prairie du Chien Correctional Institution (PDCI) to the Division of Adult Institutions to serve as a medium-security correctional institution for youthful offenders with adult sentences in the age range of 15 to 21 years. Prairie du Chien Correctional Institution became operational on July 3, 1997. In December 2001, the operating capacity was increased from 302 to 326 youthful offenders. On July 1, 2003, PDCI transitioned from the Division of Juvenile Corrections to the Division of Adult Institutions. The age restriction of the inmates was lifted for PDCI at that time. The operating capacity was increased to 424 in August 2003. Prairie du Chien Correctional Institution continues to operate as a medium security correctional facility within the Division of Adult Institutions.
