INTRODUCTION
The Winnebago
Correctional Center is located on the shores of Lake Winnebago. The
Center is contained on 43 acres of state land in two, multi-story
brick buildings that house 250 male inmates.
The Winnebago Correctional Center was
opened in 1974 to replace a minimum security bunkhouse at the Winnebago State Farm (now
the site of the Oshkosh Correctional Institution). The Centers primary function was to
meet the needs of the state farm in the form of inmate labor and staff supervision. The
Winnebago State Farm closed in the early 1990's to facilitate one of several expansions at
the Oshkosh Correctional Institution. This significantly changed the mission of the
Center.
PROGRAMS
Winnebago Correctional Center presently
provides community-based work release experience to inmates who are preparing for return
to the community. While inmates enjoy the privilege of gaining work experience in the
community, they also pay room, board, transportation fees, as well as court ordered
restitution, fines and child support.
All inmates who have been granted the
privilege of work release must complete and pay for employability skills training that
assists them in job retention while at Winnebago and upon return to the community. All
inmates at Winnebago contribute significant hours of community service labor to area
communities free of charge during the free-time hours.
